Extensor tendonitis also referred to as tendinopathy is an inflammation in the extensor tendons situated in the foot and hand.

How to Treat Extensor Tendonitis?
1. Use ice
Ice is cold as everyone knows. This causes the blood vessels to constrict. This blood vessel constriction helps to reduce the swelling and also minimizes the pain. To do this you can apply ice that is wrapped in the towel or something of that nature.
Avoid applying ice directly on your skin. This should be done around 10-15 minutes every hour for 48 hours. This will help to treat the extensor tendonitis faster especially if you follow this routine.
2. Take NSAID
This is a non-steroidal inflammation release substance. These are things like ibuprofen, naproxen, and even aspirin. When you use the painkillers or the muscle relaxers won’t be of any use to your inflammation. This anti-steroidal drugs can be the solution.

3. Take a rest
This should be done until the tendons completely heal. It normally takes a couple of days to even months. Don’t participate in that activity until the day you fully heal.
The injury normally arises due to the overuse so trying to go back to the activity after the pain has reduced can worsen the already better situation. This can lead to tendinosis which takes around 3-9 months to heal.
4. Start exercising
If you can walk or flex your head with no pain then you can start doing some exercise. This should be a simple exercise, not an intense one. This will not only help you to heal faster but it will also make your body adapted to the activity.
5. Have an appropriate footwear

6. Use pain-relieving creams or gel

7. Toe or finger splints
Your finger or the toes might require splinting to ensure your tendon is back to its normal position. This might be done for several weeks so the extensor tendonitis heals completely.
You must have the doctor’s recommendation on how long will your finger or toes remain on the splint. The splint should be worn all the time. There is no exception if you want to heal faster.
8. Physical therapy
You might require physical therapy to get back on your normal condition. Special stretches might also be used for a tight calf muscle.
Some podiatrists might recommend to you to use the splint or the orthotic shoe inserts. This is also part of the treatment of extensor tendonitis.
7. Surgery procedures
This is always very rare. If you might be considering surgery then I would suggest that you see a very experienced surgeon in this field. This is because damage to your muscles might be so dangerous.
In some cases, you might not even be needing the surgery. So if one is needed, visit a well-experienced surgeon who has been working for a good length of time.
